News Item: Daunte Culpepper retires from NFL
Daunte had an excellent run for several years as the Vikings' starting quarterback, but it all came to an extremely abrupt end with his weak start in '05, leading up to an injury in which he tore three knee ligaments. He was never the same after that, and wound up his career with the Dolphins and then the Raiders.
Culpepper may in fact be the best Vikes QB of my lifetime (none of the '80s or '90s guys, other than Gannon, stayed for more than a year or two), and I honestly feel horrible about the way his career turned out.

Since I was not given a fair chance to come in and compete for a job, I would rather move on and win in other arenas of life.

There should be outrage (well, not as much as Culpepper would like to see, but some ) that the NFL season is starting tonight without a quarterback who could be starting for a few teams and helping out a few more as a backup. Instead, there's this : "I would rather shut the door to such 'opportunity' than continue to wait for one of my fellow quarterbacks to suffer a serious injury. Since I was not given a fair chance to come in and compete for a job, I would rather move on and win in other arenas of life.

In the NFL since 1999, Culpepper last played for the Oakland Raiders. From AP -
Daunte Culpepper, unable to land a starting or backup job this offseason, announced his retirement at the age of 31.
Culpepper had one-year offers from the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason for backup jobs, but didn't find those offers suitable. Though his surgically reconstructed knee was healthy and his arm still strong during visits to those teams, Culpepper decided to end his career.
"After taking a long look at my career and my personal convictions, I have decided to begin early retirement from the NFL effective immediately," Culpepper said in an e-mail.
